穴 is a Hanja (한자) in Korean, meaning primarily ‘hole’, ‘acupuncture point’ (혈穴), ‘vacancy’, and other related senses.
穴 is composed of ‘宀(roof/home/cover)’ on top and ‘八 (eight)’ below.
- There is currently no single definitive scholarly consensus on how the most common meaning of ‘hole’ is derived from this composition of ‘home’ and ‘eight’.
- In reference to the Grok AI analysis, the bottom part 八 (eight) depicts the two sloping or diverging lines that form the sides or walls of a cave entrance, narrowing inward (some explanations interpret these diverging lines as the entrance being "opened up" in the ground).
I attempted to interpret this Hanja from a different perspective.
For my alternative interpretation, the Hanja ‘六 (six; 6)’ and ‘木 (tree)’ should also be considered.
I previously published a semiotic interpretation of the etymology of ‘六’ and ‘木’:
六 indicates ‘6 (six)’:
Regarding why 六 represents six, I interpreted the element 八(eight) as symbolizing Jesus’ death, and 六 (six) as the time of Jesus’ death—at noon (12:00 PM), which corresponds to 6:00 in Hebrew time.
木 means Jesus on the wooden Cross:
十 represents the Cross made of wood, and the ^ signifies Jesus, combining ‘the Holy Spirit’ and ‘the body of the woman, Mary’. If we regard 八 as symbolizing Jesus’ death in this way, then in the Hanja 穴, 八 can be interpreted as the separation between the Holy Spirit and the human body.
The space created by this separation can be seen as a ‘Void’, and when considered in relation to ‘宀’, which symbolizes the Spiritual Home, this leads to the conclusion that it represents the ‘Spiritual Gate’ or ‘Portal to Heaven’—as expressed in the New King James Version (NKJV) of John 14:6, where Jesus says:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” This implies that to reach Heaven, where God the Father resides, one must go through Jesus, the embodiment of unconditional love, as the Spiritual Portal.
For these reasons, the Hanja 穴—meaning ‘hole’—is composed of ‘宀’ (representing a home) and ‘八’ (symbolizing Jesus’ death). This structure can be understood as pointing to that spiritual significance.
There is a similar example that aligns with this meaning: in Eastern medicine (traditional Oriental medicine), the Hanja characters ‘針 (needle for acupuncture)’ and ‘穴(acupuncture point)’ share this contextual significance.
針 is the tool used in acupuncture, meaning an acupuncture needle. Notably, it is composed of ‘金’ (meaning metal or gold) and ‘十’ (meaning ten). In my previously published articles on the semiotic etymology of ‘金’ and ‘十’:
金 means ‘Jesus’ Ascension’, and 十 means ‘Jesus’ wooden Cross’.
In Oriental medicine acupuncture, the points where the needle is inserted are called 혈자리(穴; acupoints). Here, 혈 refers to the character 穴 (hole). These acupoints cannot be visually distinguished on the skin or with the naked eye under normal conditions. However, when the body is in pain or diseased, they manifest as reaction points or trigger points, revealing their locations.
In other words, they can be interpreted as invisible 'portals' through which therapeutic effects are achieved.
This mirrors the earlier explanation of 穴: through Jesus’ death—symbolizing unconditional love—Jesus becomes the Spiritual Gate or portal to Heaven, allowing access to the Spiritual Home (Paradise).
Thus, the most fundamental terms in Oriental medicine acupuncture—the treatment tool 針 and the site of therapeutic effect 穴—embody this meaning through their names.
