門 is a Hanja (Chinese character) meaning “door,” “gate,” or “entrance.
The etymology of 門 (mén in Mandarin, “door/gate”) is a classic pictograph—one of the six traditional categories of Chinese character formation (六書). Its earliest forms (in oracle bone and bronze scripts) clearly depict two vertical door leaves (resembling swinging saloon doors) attached to a horizontal lintel or frame at the top—viewed from the front as a pair of double doors.
However, I propose a semiotic interpretation of 門, deriving it symbolically from 由 (associated with the Burning Bush) and 宙 (time), rather than its conventional pictographic origin.
In Oriental philosophy, the concept of space and time—embodied in the Hanja 宇宙 (universe)—is explained through the 10 Heavenly Stems (天干) and 12 Earthly Branches (地支), which combine into the 60-year sexagenary cycle (六十甲子). This system serves as a fundamental model for the structure, generation, transformation, and cyclical flow of the universe.
  • Heavenly Stems (天干, 10 Stems) → Represent the energy of Heaven (天), with a strong Yang (陽) nature. → Primarily used to finely divide the flow of time (e.g., 10-day cycles, 10-year cycles, etc.).
  • Earthly Branches (地支, 12 Branches) → Represent the energy of Earth (地), with a strong Yin (陰) nature. → Encompass both space (directions/orientations) and time (12 two-hour periods per day, 12 months).
The 10 Heavenly Stems consist of the following Hanja characters: 甲 乙 丙 丁 戊 己 庚 辛 壬 癸.
Notably, the first character of the Heavenly Stems is 甲.
In my previously published articles, I interpreted 由 as symbolizing the Burning Bush—God (YHWH) as encountered by Moses—composed of 丨 (wood, evoking the material of Jesus’ Cross) and 日 (sun, light, flame). The 日 positioned atop the 丨 transforms into 甲 (the first Heavenly Stem).
In my analysis, 由 comprises 日 (sun/light/flame) above 丨 (a vertical wood stick or penetrating line). This vividly recalls the Biblical account in Exodus 3 (Mount Horeb), where Moses encountered God in the Burning Bush—a bush aflame with fire yet not consumed.I see 由 as an infographic of this event: • 日 represents the burning fire/light, namely God’s first word. • 丨 represents the bush (a woody plant or tree).
In this pivotal encounter, God revealed His name as “I AM THAT I AM” (Exodus 3:14, KJV) and commissioned Moses. The word “AM” signifies existence, being, and presence—intrinsically tied to the dimension of TIME.
My earlier article explained 門 as stemming from the 冂 component of 靈 (spirit/soul), combined with 日(representing Jesus and the Holy Spirit, respectively). When the 日 from 甲 “migrates” inwardly between two vertical lines (丨 丨), the character 門 emerges.
The placement of two 日 elements inwardly between the 丨 lines suggests an “entrance” or gateway—mirroring the meaning of 門 as a gate or door.
In this symbolic context, we can infer that 門 is composed of Jesus (with YHWH’s light) and the Holy Spirit (with YHWH’s light), each component deriving from 由 and carrying the connotation of time.
In conclusion, in my semiotic interpretation, represents a ‘Time-Travel Gate to Heaven’.
