The Previous Article:

The Chinese character 四 (meaning “four,” pronounced ‘sa’ 사 in Korean) is composed of the components 口, 丨, and 乚. In my previous Korean article about the number 4, I interpreted these components as follows:

• 口: Eden Garden
• 丨: The first sinful human, Eve
• 乚: Snake, Satan

Basis for the Original Interpretation:

I based my view of ‘丨’ as “the first sinful human, Eve” on the book The Discovery of Genesis by Kang and Nelson. In their book, the authors describe 四 as mimicking the shape of a snare (trap) set by Lucifer. They explain that Lucifer used four deceptive statements to tempt Eve into disobedience:

1. You will not die.
2. God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened.
3. You will be like God.
4. You will know good and evil.

(Genesis 3:4–5)

They argued that the Chinese character for “four” (四) was created in the shape of this snare.

Based on this, I originally hypothesized:
亅 (Eve, the first human to sin) + 乚 (snake/Satan tempting Eve) + 口 (Eden Garden, the space where sin occurred).

 

Why I Revise it?

However, while publishing many other articles (on characters such as 靈, 黃金, 木, etc.), I discovered that the component ‘丨’ overwhelmingly represents “Wood” in most cases.

 

Revised Interpretation:

In this context, considering that the snake (乚) first tempted Eve successfully in the Garden (口), but Adam also became a partner in the sin, I concluded that interpreting ‘丨’ as the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (the Wood on which the forbidden fruit hung) is more reasonable than symbolizing a person. Therefore, I have revised my previous interpretation of 四 and published the updated version. 

Final Interpretation of 四:

• 口: Eden Garden (My opinion? Mouth; Life Word of God).
• 丨: Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil (revised from “The first sinful human, Eve”)
• 乚: Snake, Satan

 

Furthermore, regarding the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil,” I interpret it as the “Tree of Life.” 

The reason is this: if the holy space of Eden Garden is invaded (infiltrated) by the dark force—Satan appearing as a snake—then the Tree must be the “Tree of Life”, because Satan’s fundamental attribute is to destroy the “Life” that God has given.

 

Why does the number 4 (四) include a snake as a symbol of Satan?

 

In Korean, the Chinese characters for “snake” — 蛇 and 巳 — are both pronounced “sa” (사), which is exactly the same pronunciation as the number 4 (四). Additionally, the English word “Satan” is pronounced “Sa-tan,” which also begins with the sound 'sa.'

From a biblical perspective, I believe this shared pronunciation provides a significant clue: the Korean word for the number 4 (四) is pronounced “sa,” just like the words for snake and the beginning of “Satan.” This phonetic connection symbolically suggests that Satan (represented by the snake) infiltrated or invaded the Tree of Life, and that this meaning is embedded in the HanJa character 四.

I have also reinterpreted the character 西 (The West) by applying this revised understanding, changing 丨 from “The first sinful human, Eve” to “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.” A revised publication for 西 is planned.
