The Chinese character 口 means “mouth.”
It is one of the oldest and simplest characters,
originating as a pictograph (象形) of an open mouth. At this point, the author began to wonder: If
the character truly depicts an open mouth, why is it rendered as a square? If
it represents an open mouth, it would seem more convincing to depict the
boundary between the upper and lower lips with a curved, oval outline that
reflects the natural curvature of the lips.
From a theological and philosophical
perspective, the concept of the “mouth” has long been regarded as
elegantly simple yet profoundly foundational. It embodies humanity’s capacity
for nourishment, voice, and connection. Its spiritual resonance
arises from the way words spoken and sustenance taken in shape one’s path in
the universe.
In this spiritual context, the author proposes
the following semiotic interpretation of the components that form 口:
- The right vertical line 丨 symbolizes Yeshua (Jesus, the
Righteous One).
- The left vertical line 丨 symbolizes the Holy Spirit.
- The upper horizontal line 一 represents the Heavenly
realm.
- The lower horizontal line 一 represents the Earthly
realm.
Supporting reasons for this interpretation:
[1] About two vertical lines, this reading draws
on the author’s prior analysis of other characters such as 宀 (roof), 門 (gate/door), and 靈 (spirit), in which the
two vertical lines are consistently interpreted as pillars: the right pillar
representing Yeshua and the left pillar representing the Holy Spirit.
[2] About the two horizontal lines, these are understood in light of the spiritual principle that “the spiritual resonance of the mouth emerges from how words and intake shape one’s path in the universe.” They symbolize the Heavenly realm (upper line) and the Earthly realm (lower line), together encompassing the concepts of space and time within the universe inhabited by humanity.
This concept is further reinforced by the
component 雨 (rain) inside the
character 靈 (spirit), which itself contains four short
horizontal lines.
In this interpretive framework, the HanJa 口, meaning “open mouth,”
implies that its spiritual resonance emerges from how words and intake shape
one’s path in the universe. Furthermore, the character 口 appears three times within 靈 (spirit).
These three mouths (口口口) respectively represent Yeshua,
God the Father, and the Holy Spirit. Through these three channels, humanity can
receive the Good News of God’s unconditional love.=^^=.
