Hanja 黃 means “gold yellow color.”黃 is composed of the following components:
廿 (입; twenty, 二十, ip in Korean pronunciation) 凵 (감; mouth opening, gam in Korean pronunciation) + 一 (일; one, il in Korean pronunciation) → 廿 (twenty) 丅 (하; below-ness, ha in Korean pronunciation) 日 (일; sun, il in Korean pronunciation) 八 (팔; eight, pal in Korean pronunciation)
廿 (twenty, 二十, 입; ip in Korean pronunciation)
In the current Hanja analysis, 廿 can be decomposed into 凵 (mouth opening) and 一 (one). If this interpretation is correct, how can the meaning of “twenty” be logically derived? Traditional etymology has clear limitations in explaining the concept of “twenty.”
I have therefore attempted a semiotic interpretation of the number 20 in Hanja.
20 is written as 二十. 二 means “two,” and 十 means “ten.” From a semiotic perspective, however, 十 can be understood as two symbolic structures or objects that each represent “ten.” Supporting evidence for this “twofold” symbolism appears in the Ark of the Covenant, where two cherubim (2 angels) stand on either side of the lid, each associated with the symbolic structure of 十. The Bible consists of the Old Testament (before Yeshua) and the New Testament (after Yeshua). In the Old Testament, God gave humanity the Ten Commandments through Moses as a guide for life. Thus, the Ten Commandments represent the primary symbol of “ten” in the Old Testament. In the New Testament, Yeshua’s cross becomes the ultimate marker of God’s love for humanity—the cross itself being another 十. In this context, 20 (二十) carries two layers of meaning:
  1. If limited to the Old Testament and the Ark of the Covenant, it refers to the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments stored inside the Ark.
  2. When the New Testament is also considered, it includes the prophetic symbolism of Yeshua’s crucifixion event.
Given that the object in question is called the “Ark of the Covenant,” it is reasonable to connect it with Noah’s Ark and interpret the symbolism within the framework of Old Testament sacred objects.
To summarize:
When the Ark of the Covenant is viewed in connection with Noah’s Ark in the Old Testament, the character 廿 symbolizes the Ark itself. The two short vertical lines protruding upward from the single horizontal line represent the two cherubim (2 angels) positioned on either side of the Ark’s lid. This is a semiotic depiction of the actual physical form of the Ark’s mercy seat. Furthermore, the component 凵 within 廿 is the inverted form of 冂, the dolmen-like shape that appears in 靈 (spirit/soul).
About semiotic Interpretation of 冂, in my analysis, 冂 evokes the shape of a dolmen and forms part of 靈. I interpret 冂 as symbolizing the Trinity: Yeshua (Jesus) as 丨, God the Father as 一, and the Holy Spirit as 丨. This Trinitarian symbolism is visible in the character 靈.
The question then arises: what does it mean that the Trinity symbol 冂 is oriented downward (as 凵) rather than upward?
When we refer to “gold” in Korean, we use two characters: 黃金.
黃 expresses the gold color, while 金 expresses the gold metal itself. The Hanja 黃, which symbolizes the gold color associated with the Ark of the Covenant in the Old Testament, and 金, which symbolizes Yeshua’s Ascension in the New Testament, together proclaim the full gospel of God across both Testaments in a strikingly clear manner. I have previously published on the concept of Yeshua’s Ascension in relation to the Hanja 金. The Ark of the Covenant, containing two tablets and symbolizing the Cross of salvation, indicates that two major pieces of Good News have been given to humanity.
If 金 represents Yeshua’s Ascension in the New Testament, what Hanja embodies the concept of Ascension in the Old Testament?
I propose that the Old Testament concept of 'Ascension' is expressed through the character 黃. It uses the shape of the Ark of the Covenant and the inverted Trinitarian symbol 冂 (as ). The single horizontal line represents the roof of the Ark, while the two short vertical lines passing slightly downward through the top of 凵 depict the two cherubim (2 angels) guarding the Ark.
What, then, is the method of Ascension that allows humanity to return to our spiritual home—Heaven, Paradise, God’s Kingdom (穴)?
I believe God has provided the answer across both Old and New Testament history through the Hanja for “gold,” 黃金 (황금 in KR): • Old Testament Ascension → 黃 • New Testament Ascension → 金
丅 (below-ness, ha in Korean pronunciation)
The component 丅 (“below-ness”) in 黃 also appears in 靈 (spirit) and 宇 (space/universe). The horizontal line 一 signifies “God,” “God’s Kingdom,” and “Heaven/Paradise.”
The vertical line 丨 connotes “God the Father,” “God’s will,” and “God’s omnipresent space filled with the timeline.” In traditional etymology, 丨 also means “stick” or “rod.” From my philosophical perspective on 靈, I infer that 干 is formed from 丅 and 一. The central 丨 in 靈 corresponds to the 丨 emerging from 中 (center), representing God the Father.
In summary, reveals God’s omnipresence and spatial “below-ness” from His Kingdom, as well as the Will of God and Aaron’s wooden staff (symbolized by 丨).
日 (sun, il in Korean pronunciation)
As noted, the vertical line 丨 carries the meanings of “God the Father,” “God’s will,” and “God’s omnipresent space imbued with timeline.” When this 丨 is combined with 日, the character 由 is formed, meaning “origin” or “stem from.” Just as 宙 means “time of the universe,” 由 refers to the “time of the universe.”
In , the same is shared between 丅 (space) and 由 (time).

八 (eight, pal in Korean pronunciation)
The component 八 (eight) appears in 船 (ship) and 六 (six).
In 船, scholars Kang and Nelson explain that 八 represents Noah’s family—four men and four women.
I have previously posted that 八 in 六 symbolizes the separation of Yeshua into the Holy Spirit and His physical body, with the void between them representing the spiritual portal to Heaven, Paradise, and God’s Kingdom.
Another meaning of 八 is found in the Beatitudes—the eight blessings given by Yeshua. These serve as the manual guiding us into the Paradise of God’s Kingdom: “Humble people with pure hearts are meek and merciful even to the enemies by whom they were once persecuted. This can be attained by abiding in the righteousness of Yeshua.” (The Beatitudes, Matthew 5:3–12, modified by Seok Woo Yang, December 26, 2025).
The eight Beatitudes (八). Beatitude derives from beatus (happy, blessed). 88 (八八): The Ethiopian Bible contains 88 books. (八 in the Old Testament = the 8 persons in Noah’s Ark [4 men & 4 women]; 八 in the New Testament = Yeshua’s Beatitudes). Trinity (3) + 1 (Yeshua as descendant of Adam and Eve’s third son Seth [Korean pronunciation of “three” is “set” or “sam”] and descendant of Noah’s first son) [Seok Woo Yang, January 8, 2026]
SUMMARY
The Korean word for gold, 黃金, uses 黃 to express the gold color and 金 to express the gold metal. From a semiotic viewpoint, 黃 contains every symbolic element representing the 'Ark of the Covenant' of the Old Testament. Meanwhile, 金 encapsulates the meaning of Yeshua’s Ascension in the New Testament and presents Yeshua’s life manual—the eight Beatitudes—as the core concept of that Ascension. In this light, the fact that the Ethiopian Bible preserves 88 books can also be understood as a divine signal.
The spiritual message of 黃金 is encoded in the number 88 of the Ethiopian Bible.
It transcends historical time to present humanity with the life manual for individual salvation in both the Old and New Testaments:

The Ark of the Covenant (symbolized by the 8 members of Noah’s family who boarded the Ark) and Yeshua’s 8 Beatitudes.
